STEMinista Club is a 6-week after-school science club for girls who are curious, creative, and love to figure out how things work.

Each week, we’ll meet a different STEMinista, from Eugenie Clark to Marie Tharp, learn about her story and discoveries, and then roll up our sleeves for a hands-on science experiment inspired by her work.
STEMinista Club is all about discovering that science is for everyone, and that you have what it takes to be a scientist, too!

Shark Lady: Eugenie Clark
Session 1:
September 24 | Sharks, Marine Biology & Animal Adaptations
Dive into the fascinating world of sharks with marine biologist Eugenie Clark, known as the “Shark Lady.” Discover what makes sharks such incredible animals, explore how scientists study marine life, and get a close-up look at real shark tooth fossils.
Hands-on adventure: Examine shark teeth like a scientist, investigate how their shapes relate to their function, and take on a creative challenge inspired by shark adaptations. We’ll explore how scientists use observations and evidence to understand the amazing animals that live in our oceans.

Fossil Hunter: Mary Anning
Session 2:
October 1 | Paleontology, Fossils & Earth Science
Travel back in time with fossil hunter Mary Anning, whose remarkable discoveries helped scientists understand life from millions of years ago. Learn how she uncovered the remains of ancient creatures along the coast of England and helped change the way people understood Earth's history.
Hands-on adventure: Become a paleontologist! Make your own fossils, then embark on a fossil-digging challenge. Carefully uncover hidden treasures, examine your discoveries, and piece together clues about the creatures that lived long ago.

The Secret Code of Life: Rosalind Franklin
Session 3:
October 8 | Genetics, DNA & Molecular Biology
What makes you, you? Explore the microscopic world of DNA and learn about the groundbreaking work of scientist Rosalind Franklin. Discover how scientists use evidence, photographs, and careful observation to investigate the structure of the molecule that carries the instructions for life.
Hands-on adventure: Build your own colorful 3D DNA model and explore the building blocks of life. We may even try a strawberry DNA extraction to see what DNA looks like outside of a cell!

Light It Up! Hertha Marks Ayrton
Session 4:
October 15 | Electrical Engineering, Electricity & Circuits
Meet Hertha Marks Ayrton, a pioneering mathematician, physicist, and electrical engineer whose work helped advance the science of electricity. Discover how electrical circuits work and how engineers use scientific ideas to create useful inventions.
Hands-on adventure: Build your own paper circuits using copper tape, batteries, and LED lights. Experiment with switches, troubleshoot your designs, and create a colorful light-up project to take home!

Rocket Science: Katherine Johnson
Session 5:
October 22 | Mathematics, Space Science & Engineering
Blast off with mathematician Katherine Johnson! Learn how math helps scientists and engineers calculate spacecraft trajectories, navigate space missions, and explore beyond Earth. Discover how Katherine's mathematical work contributed to some of NASA's historic spaceflight achievements.
Hands-on adventure: Design, build, and launch your own rockets! Test different shapes and materials, make predictions, and experiment with ways to help your rocket fly farther or straighter. Get ready to explore the science of force, motion, and flight!

Spooky Science: Earth's Hidden Worlds with Marie Tharp
Session 6:
October 29 | Geology, Oceanography & Earth Science
Celebrate Halloween with a journey into the mysterious worlds hidden beneath our feet and beneath the ocean! Inspired by geologist and oceanographic cartographer Marie Tharp, discover how scientists mapped the ocean floor and helped reveal the incredible landscape beneath the waves.
We'll explore underwater mountains, deep ocean trenches, Earth's hidden layers, and some of the fascinating forces that shape our planet.
Hands-on adventure: Create your own 3D model of Earth's layers using clay, investigate what lies beneath the surface, and explore the science behind some of Earth's most mysterious landscapes. We might even uncover a few spooky surprises along the way!
Meet the Educator
Konika Ray Wong, M.Ed. has spent more than two decades teaching science and helping people understand and feel empowered by their changing bodies. A science educator and body literacy specialist, Konika brings a unique blend of scientific education, social-emotional learning, and feminist perspective to her work.
In 2021, she founded Girl Power Science, offering body literacy and puberty education workshops for K–12 students and their parents. She is also the author of two children’s books, “One in a Million: A First Book About Periods” and “How to Tame a Tickle Monster: A First Book About Body Safety”.
